Most people are terrible conversationalists, me included.
I’ve read more than a handful of books on how to get better at conversing. Did I admit that out loud? 🤦♂️
Being an introvert and someone who rather escape to my family, get lost inside my brain, or be absorbed into a great book rather than spark a conversation with a stranger, over the years, I’ve had to push myself beyond my comfort zone.
Conversations suck because most people have an agenda or want to avoid being uncomfortable.
They’re plagued with thinking about what they want to say next, how to escape a conversation, or default to one of the classic conversation starters, “so how’s the weather in your neck of the woods?”
All of which leads to a really shitty and sometimes awkward conversation.
In the book Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, Oliver Burkeman shares a simple yet powerful tip to have incredible conversations:
First, get rid of boredom or any pre-conceived agenda.
We try to escape a conversation because we’re uncomfortable or rather be doing something else.
