The Golden Rule Was Wrong, Here’s What To Do Instead
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
Treating others as you want to be treated assumes people want to be treated the way you do.
The Golden Rule approaches “other” with a biased sense of “self.” Most sane humans understand not to treat others like shit, but the Golden Rule is an excellent reminder if they don’t.
But our daily lives are often confused by the mirror myth. We assume “what works for me works for them,” which is rarely the case.
A better approach is to treat others as they want to be treated.
Be empathetic to their unique personality. Everyone is unique. Boxing someone into a race, religion, or gender is disingenuous.
Learn about their fears and emotional triggers. If you constantly push their hot buttons, you’re not treating someone as they want to be treated; thus, you inversely break the Golden Rule.
Treating someone as you would want to be treated has nothing to do with you. It has everything to do with the other person.
The lens you view the world through should be seen from the people’s eyes in which you interact.
Love, compassion, and a sense of self is what the Golden Rule wants to achieve.
Remember, treat others as you want to be treated through the efforts of how they want to be treated.
