How much of your day is controlled by your thoughts?

It feels like compulsive thinking takes your brain hostage. Freedom begins with you realize you are not the thinker. You are the one who can observe the entity that thinks.

Once you start to observe the thinker, you activate a higher level of consciousness.

Here’s how you can free yourself from your mind.

Listen to the voice in your head as often as possible. “Pay particular attention to any repetitive thought patterns, those old audiotapes that have been playing in your head perhaps for many years.”

This is what Eckhart Tolle calls “watching the thinker.”

When you watch, the thought losses power–compulsive thinking diminish as you lose identification with it.

An alternative to watching the thinker is to direct the focus of your attention into the Now.

Become intensely conscious of the present moment.

In everyday life, you can practice by taking any routine activity “that normally is only a means to an end” and give it your full attention. As you do, it will become an end in itself.

You’ll be hyper-focused and present in what you’re doing right now.

Learn to disidentify with your mind.

This is a vital step towards enlightenment and a flourishing life.
