How To Promote An Incredible Company Culture By Dealing With People Who Can’t Embody Its Values

Being an a** isn’t a good culture.

I’ve learned this difficult lesson more often than I’d like to admit.

But, it’s been hundreds of times. Just because an owner or leadership team has certain values, which a company typically adopts over time, that never means everyone will agree with them.

Some people might downright hate them — and that’s a good thing.

What’s not good for the company is tolerating people who blatantly ignore what’s most important to the team.

These people are Culture Cancers.

They can be a carcinoid tumor, which grows slowly, or metastatic cancer, which spreads fast.

Either type is detrimental to the team. They can be highly skilled people, but the cost to the team is too expensive to retain. Their attitude, behavior, or a mix of both hurts the team as a whole.

They get stuff done, but they bring everyone down in the process.

There are three types of culture cancers that must be corrected.

The first type is people who can’t embody the culture.
