How To Make Better Decisions By Managing Your Emotions

Bad decisions begin with the reaction to your emotions.

Think back to a recent time when you had an argument or made a foolish decision. Peel back the layers. Did you follow an emotion rather than logic?

Unmanaged emotions create immense pain.

What’s an emotion?

According to Eckhart Tolle, an emotion is where your mind and body meet.

“It’s your body’s reaction to your mind.”

If someone does something you disagree with, your heart begins to race, your palms sweat, and you make a silly remark, “you’re stupid, stop doing it that way.”

Stupid, then creates pain if you follow The Four Agreements; agreement one being impeccable with your word.

A thought is in your head, while an emotion is mainly felt in the body.

Emotions try to control your body, thus controlling your reactions.

Managing your emotions takes self-awareness and empathy.

Start by watching your emotions.

Don’t control it — just let it be. You are the watcher of the emotion.

Ask yourself, “what’s going on inside me at this moment?”

Don’t analyze it. Just watch. Focus all your attention within.

“Feel the energy of the emotion.”

Take five slow breaths in and out while you continue to watch your emotion.

Let it settle.

Once you’re calm and the emotion has released itself from your body, then you began to react from a place of logic and understanding.
