How To Make Better Choices From Your Imaginary Deathbed
We all fear death to some degree.
It’s scary. We’re trapped in a world where we seek to know more but end it all with the ultimate not knowing. One day we’ll eventually die, transforming our humanly being into a particle of infinity.
But the big problem is, we forget how to live.
We’re trapped reliving the past or trying to live based on a plan of our ideal future, which is never guaranteed.
But it’s with this stark reality we can make better decisions:
View every decision through the lens of death.
“The ultimate way to test desires, is to practice” making the same decision “while imagining yourself on your deathbed,” writes Luke Burgis in his book Wanting.
The Stoics believe that you should make the most of your life.
Many people change their life around when they come face-to-face with death. It’s a form of shock therapy to accept your mortality, which forces you to start living it.
Instead of waiting for a life-altering moment, “choose to live to the fullest now;” a great reminder from The Daily Stoic.
