How To Deal With Death That Will Help Free You From The Ultimate Unknown
There’s only one reason we’re scared of death.
The unknown.
My dad was recently diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, and my mom and sisters were frightened. Rightfully so. I cried like a baby when I got the news.
News like this is hard to digest, like swallowing a cup full of nails.
But we fear death because we fear the unknown, and there’s no greater unknown than how you’ll die.
In a simple experiment, human lab rats were hooked up to electrodes, which pulsated a mild shock to the skin. The researchers then measured the physiological responses that correlate with stress. In all the studies, the researchers found that any element of unpredictability dramatically increased people’s discomfort, despite there being no variance in the intensity of the shock.
My family’s biggest concern about my dad was what tomorrow had to bring.
Was he going to live? Die? Fight? Suffer?
