Every Job Must Have Clear Expectations, Or Else

Hiring talent is the top concern of CEOs.
They believe not having talent is the biggest threat to their business. I’ve hired every type of person, except convicts–that I know of. Hiring feels like a complex, drawn-out process. It takes weeks of work and months of onboarding.
If hiring is a top concern, then the only logistical solution is to always be hiring and hire the right people.
That doesn’t mean creating an overstaffed organizational chart that collapses under its weight.
The most critical step in a hiring process is planning. Companies must clearly define the role they want to fill and the person who best fits that role.
A job description seldom works in solace. A job ad starts with you clarifying the five to seven non-negotiable expectations for a position.
These are the expectations I have for my Junior Account Executive role:
- Superb communication skills, both verbal and written.
- A high work-ethic.
- A high degree of accountability.
- Extremely organized.
- A proactive personality.
- Willing to continually learn and improve.
- Has 1+ years of retail, sales, or customer service experience.
Over the years, team members who embodied these expectations grew into senior sales roles.
We hire ruthlessly based on these criteria. The candidates and team members know what’s expected of them.
Job descriptions are often overwhelming and unclear of what success looks like for a given role.
Focus on less. Let expectations guide your hiring efforts.
