Leadership is an unglamorous role that requires traits that not everyone possesses.

Great leaders are accountable for their areas of responsibility. No matter what happens, the blame climbs upward.

Leaders are self-aware and empathetic, recognizing that we lead humans, not robots.

If an issue occurs, great leaders don’t complain; they solve it.

Despite what great leaders do, there are five core leadership failings that must be dealt with:

Control-itis. An inflammatory disease of a leader’s control gland. Leaders have it when they have a deep need to control things, especially when they hand-off to other people.

Abdication. A leader who hands something important off passively or abruptly.

Poor self-management. A leader who is not a great role model of the behaviors they expect from their team.

Passivity. A leader who accepts the status quo and does not hold others accountable for their positive contribution to the companies single biggest objective, values, and KPIs.

Ignorance. A leader who is blind to their team’s unique personalities and believes “whats works for me works for them.”
