Everyone is distracted.

They’re easily triggered by the “next thing” that flicks across their computer screen. I’m a victim, too, constantly fighting the urge for a cheap dopamine hit. Some individuals inside my company watch our chat feed like it’s the Super Bowl, waiting for the one crucial thing to reply to, even when it doesn’t involve them.

Is distraction a disease? Perhaps. But what’s even rarer is when you ask a leader in a company, “what’s the one key daily productivity KPI that everyone on the team is focused on in this department?” You’ll hear crickets. Early in my career, I’d recite an area of responsibility, a quarter goal, or just bark, “More sales!”

In a company where people lack a clear picture of what’s most important, distraction festers, and poor performance infects everyone.
