At many points in my career as a small-business CEO, I’ve made the mistake of being a crucial individual contributor to critical functions of the company. That was a mistake. It’s a CEO’s job to work on the business, not in it.

Role 1: Setting The Company Playbook

A company playbook is broken down into the following sections:

  • The Vision
  • The Mission
  • Big Objective KPIs
  • Values & Guiding Principles
  • Strategy
  • Priorities
  • Who Does What (Leadership Teams)

As the CEO, you set the company vision by looking at current trends and extrapolating those trends into a future version of the company.

Everyone on your team must be passionate about the vision you’ve set.

The mission is the company’s BIG objective that pushes the team towards the vision. It’s the North Star. Ask yourself:
