3 Ways Leaders Can Avoid Making A Bad Hire

Hiring the wrong person is painful.

Painful for the company.

And worst of all, painful for fellow team members.

Leaders must prioritize hiring and onboarding.

Here are three areas leaders must hire for:

1. Attitude

Does the person fit into the culture of the company?

If not, it’s going to be a constant battle.

Maybe one of your core values is accepting problems and solving them, but the new hire is risk-averse and spins out of control when issues arise.

That’s not going to work.

2. Expectations

Does the role have 3–5 non-negotiable job expectations, and does the candidate meet them?

One of my expectations for our Junior Account Executive role is excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Anybody that doesn’t meet that expectation won’t make it through the interview process.

3. Competency

Are they competent in the skills and knowledge for the role they’re being hired for?
