3 Significant Lessons Learned After A New Employee Quit Midday

I peeked at my email at 2:00 pm on a Monday.

There was a peculiar email with the subject line, “I’m sorry.” The email went on, “I’m a shitty person and you all are great, but I resign.”

A new team member who was struggling to grasp the complexity of our business resigned. We had thought there was hope as it appeared she embodied our values.

That’s the lesson:

You can do everything right and still get it wrong.

You’re going to get it wrong when you hire.

The candidate who interviewed well might fail miserably when it’s game time.

You don’t know a person’s true nature until their put in high-stress situations.

It’s in those moments when their true colors come out.

Never stop hiring.

Hiring involves balancing current and long-term needs without over-hiring, creating a financial nightmare, or a bureaucratic cesspool.

You must learn how to build strategic depth at every level of the company.

Start by actively hiring on multiple mediums, and keeping your job ads active, forever, for key entry-level or mid-level positions.
