To maximize your communication with other mortals, you’re going to have to learn to deal with assumptions.

Humans tend to make assumptions about everything. I deal with assumptions every day in my business like they’re an acid rainstorm pouring down on a busy parade, stinging everyone it touches.

“She said this, so it must mean SHE HATES ME.”

“He did this, so it must mean HE’S OUT TO GET ME.”

Rarely are assumptions about something positive. We’re always assuming in a negative direction.

“We make assumptions about what others are doing or thinking — we take it personally — then we blame them and react by sending emotional poison with our words,” writes Don Miguel Ruiz in The Four Agreements.

The “poison” spreads fast as assumptions never stay localized in our brains. People then begin to gossip, spreading fire in a peaceful village.

“All the sadness and drama you have lived in your life was rooted in making assumptions and taking things personally,” says Ruiz.
