During a white water rafting trip on the French Broad river in Asheville, North Carolina, I got lost with my three and six-year-old sons and my mother, who is 70 years old.

Our adventure was supposed to be a leisurely two-hour paddle down a couple of class-one rapids while enjoying the beauty of the wilderness and the river. However, three hours into our journey, a storm loomed over the mountaintops, and I knew something was wrong. Lightning began to strike, the rain intensified, and my sons were scared out of their minds — I was too.

We were in the middle of F’ing nowhere, and the sun was starting to set.

Although I was in great shape, I had no idea what to do if I had to spend a week camping in the wilderness with my family — except climbing trees and breaking branches. That concerned me.

I thought to myself, I work out every day, eat well, and have the mental toughness of a rhino, so I began to paddle ferociously for hours which took us to a bridge in Tennessee (a whole other state), where the guides picked us up.

The lesson from this story is never to get complacent.

Instead, always look to improve yourself every day because you’ll need a particular skill when you least expect…
