When someone unexpectedly quits, it feels personal.

Like someone slowly plucking out every hair in your head. It’s annoying. It feels like you’ve taken a step back, especially when that person was being developed as a grow player. But, the truth is, it’ll happen again.

There are three reasons people leave, and it’s your job as a leader to spot them.

1. A life event

Some people leave because a life event occurred that you didn’t see.

Maybe they wanted to stay at home with their children, or a family member is sick. There are thousands of reasons, but if they quit, you missed the opportunity to help them work through it.

In your weekly one-on-ones, get a little personal. See if you can spot the issues ahead of time and help your team through personal issues.

Reiterate their value and give them some flexibility to work on what they’re going through.

2. Work Hygiene

There may be something in the workplace that’s an irritant to your team member.

Maybe it’s you; you’re controlling, micromanaging leadership style. It could be someone on the team that’s being rude or a hundred…
